Comprehensive but user-friendly, reasonably challenging but accessible to a variety of levels, Yoga Shakti is inarguably one of the best yoga products on the market--no small achievement when one considers just how many of them there are. Instructor-creator Shiva Rea, a California-based yogi of considerable international renown, specializes in vinyasa yoga (a vinyasa is essentially a series of flowing, connected poses, incorporating breath and movement and cultivating heat, strength, flexibility, and balance). Four complete practices are presented, ranging in length from 42 to 85 minutes and including Basic Flow (for beginners), two more vigorous Solar Flow sequences, and a Lunar Flow sequence falling somewhere in the middle in terms of degree of difficulty; familiar poses like sun salutations, forward bends, lunges, twists, and inversions are featured, although Rea adds many of her own touches (such as the four "dancing warrior" sections, sun salutation variations designed for intermediate users and focusing on hips, backbends, and so on), and there are also sections devoted to pranayama (breathing exercises) and meditation. It's all good, but the principal innovation of Yoga Shakti is the "yoga matrix," which allows users to customize and program their own workouts, drawing on portions of any or all of the four sequences to create series of various lengths and levels of intricacy (some guidelines are suggested for the less experienced) and thus keep their practices fresh and evolving. One can also do the various workouts with or without the instruction audio track on (the Indian-New Age-flavored music is quite good, and usually unobtrusive), and there's even an entire second disc, containing interviews, additional instruction, travel footage (filming took place primarily in India and the Maldive Islands), and more. All in all, Yoga Shakti is most impressive. --Sam Graham

my favorite yoga dvdMay 02, 2008 absolutely love this dvd, being able to customize your routine is THE BEST and her voice is so calming and I love to watch her do the moves and the backgrounds are serene, a must have
Complete Yoga DVDApr 29, 2008 This DVD is perfect for the long-time yoga practitioner who knows his/her limits and is looking to push them. The matrix also can help extend the use-life of the DVD, but after owning the DVD for a month and using the DVD 8 times, I can confidently say I'm still another 10-15 times away from using the matrix as Shiva's pre-set routines are nicely ordered. The one downside to the DVD is the matrix does not tell you how long each routine is, which is a driving factor for a lot of my mid-week practices. Also, the dvd moves quickly from chapter to chapter which is good for an advanced user, but requires some pausing for the less inexperienced user.
A must have for your yoga collectionApr 11, 2008 By far Shiva Rea's best yoga dvd. The yoga matrix allows you to create your own sequences dependant on how you would like to work in each practice. Shiva Rea gives plenty of options to allow you to work to your own level and yet the challenges are still there for you to aim for.
On the dvd is also technical instructionals, on the Bandhas and allignment, which are helpful and informative.
There is also plenty on meditation and pranyama.
Shiva Rea's freeform yoga demonstration is a delight to see.
There are interviews with renowned yogis - p.s. I don't really understand what the yoga instructor who demonstrated the different moods with his face was doing but it was very interesting to watch.
best yoga dvd ever!Apr 08, 2008 Multiple yoga parts to pick from to keep you from getting bored. Challenging to beginners to intermediate. Just love the calmness and strength of the instructor.
great!Apr 06, 2008 this a great great yoga dvd with beautiful presentation ... the dvd itself is very well-structured and the matrix system makes it even better
shiva rea seemed to me a bit much at first but when i got into the mood i found her both soothing and articulate.
Perhaps my only comment would be less meditation (especially since I can't make out what they say in the mantras and they arent written anywhere) but given the structure of the dvd & matrix, you can always skip and get straight to the practices..
