The Schwinn 430 is an excellent buy.Jul 04, 2008 I've owned my 430 for fifteen months so far and I'm still using it almost every day because it just feels good. And I'm not one for premeditated, self-inflicted exercise. It's silky smooth, very quiet, and built so solidly I suspect it will outlast me. There were no missing or incorrect pieces and two hours is about right for assembly time.
I did learn quickly that it performs best if it sits on a heavy pad. I bought one at WalMart for less than $20.00 that works perfectly. I also discovered that the grease Schwinn uses is too heavy and too little had been applied. The pivoting points were stiff and actually became warm to the touch with use. I bought a small tube of lithium based white grease (for bicycles) at the hardware store and regreased the machine. The difference was like night and day. Overall, I am very happy with my choice.
Awesome DealJul 01, 2008 I started my research for an elliptical with gym quality but within my budget. I read several reviews that this ellipticalSchwinn 430 Elliptical Trainer, was the best deal. When I did a search and found the Schwinn 430 on Amazon for $200 less then the retail cost, I was hooked. It was an even better deal that is applied for Free Shipping, this saved me another $123. Unfortunately the only issue I had was the shipping. My husband and I both work and the freight company didn't provide a time frame that worked for our schedules, so I had to pick the item up vs. taking a day off work. Even though I had to pick this up , it was an easy and quick drive the freight company was very nice. Please keep in mind, this item is heavy, it was difficult for me to help me husband carry this in the house. Be prepared to have a helping hand or two or a hand cart. When I did get the elliptical in the house and began unpacking, I was skeptical about all the parts being in the box, as I read reviews that some people had parts missing. I was in luck, no parts missing and it took me about 2 hours to put together. I had the help of my husband which went a little quicker. But I could have easily done it myself. I did read other reviews that the machine squeaked and after
Schwinn 430 Good ValueJun 28, 2008 I puurchased a Schwinn 430 for my wife's birthday about 2 months ago from Amazon. I looked around at local retail outlets, but the sale price on Amazon plus free shipping amounted to about a $150.00 price break. It was delivered within 8 days.
Assembly was not difficult at all. I took my time and read the directions completely before beginning assembly. All told, it took me about two hours to put it together. I didn't see any of the labelling or missing parts issues others had experienced. I did have one bolt hole where the threads were stripped, and it was on the flywheel assembly, which is the largest part. Since the bolt was one of several, I put some teflon tape on it and installed the bolt. There were also some minor alignment issues, but leaving the bolts only finger tight until all were installed allowed for proper alignment of all holes.
It is a very smooth and quiet machine, and I have been using it about 6 days per week since we got it. There is a tendency for my feet to come off the footpads at higher speeds, and I would be happy with a softer surface on the pads, but I will probably add some cushioning material to increase the comfort level a bit.
The biggest issue I have had so far is that the machine started developing some squeaks at higher speeds and resistance levels. I loosened and then tightened several different bolt locations, with varying levels of success. I then purchased some red wheel bearing grease and dissassembled and repacked the rotating shafts with a little more grease, and then tightened up the footpad mount bolts. The machine is now completely noise free.
I am very happy with the 430. I think it is an excellent value for the price. Between that and my Bowflex, I am able to maintain a workout program with a good balance between cardio and strength training. I rated the machine at 4 stars, primarily due to the assembly issues and my concern that the squeaks may require some recurring maintenance.
Schwinn 430 Elliptical positive reviewJun 25, 2008 I would highly recommend the Schwinn 430 elliptical to your average home user. It's a good deal for the price. The machine is very stable and smooth during the workouts even for a heavier user. With the front wheel design it's easy on your knees unlike some rear wheel ellipticals. The assemble does take awhile and patience is a must. The parts are clearly labeled...there's just a lot of them. There are 2 parts that come pre-lubricated. Resist the temptation to clean these parts. These lubricated parts help prevent the machine from squeaking.
This is probably one of the best ellipticals on the market for this price range.

Works as advertized. Well worth it!Jun 15, 2008 I bought mine in Oct 2007 and have lost 40lbs. so far. I used this elliptical and only this while changing my eating habits. I had no fast foods, sweets (cake, cookies, candy etc...) or beer except for maybe once a month...within reason. No beer was tough at first but I became use to it :) and saved a few bucks too! I also had to learn to be consistent and stick to my exercise schedule. I exercise 30 minutes a day, three to five times a week. Although I didn't start with cutting my meal portions down I did eventually and that helped too. I learned that I couldn't do it all at once. However, by being consistent everything else kind of fell in place and became easier. I have my toughest moments during the holidays when there is so much food around to eat. Perhaps I would be able to say I lost even more weight then I did :) The main thing is be consistent and if you slip up and "backslide" get right back to work on your goal and you will be O.K. too.
